My new vision of the intervention

INTERVENTION PLAN

I plan to conduct this intervention in the form of a workshop.

I’ve named the workshop ‘Heaven and Earth Bank: Deposits Only, No Withdrawals.’ (天地银行,只存不取)

Workshop Process:

  1. Introduction and Background:
    • Introduce the purpose: I will start by explaining the purpose of the workshop. I will mention that the goal is to discuss traditional Chinese funeral customs and explore new personalized ideas.
    • Share the cultural background: I will give a brief introduction to the entire process of traditional Chinese funerals (from death to the funeral and burial) so participants can understand how it works.
      • Show the guide: I will hand out or show “A Guide to Traditional Chinese Funeral Customs” to help participants understand the main steps.
  2. First Discussion – Challenges and Thoughts on Traditional Funerals:
    • Ask guiding questions: I will encourage participants to think and discuss:
      • As a new generation, do you have any dissatisfaction with traditional funerals?
      • Have you ever felt uncomfortable with any part of funerals you’ve attended before, or found them not matching modern ideas?
      • Have you thought about what you would like your own funeral to be like?
    • Discussion and sharing: Participants can discuss the funeral steps in the guide, share their opinions, feelings, and suggest new ideas or different viewpoints.
  3. Second Discussion – Burning Paper Offerings at Funerals:
    • Introduce the topic: I will start talking about burning paper offerings at funerals:
      • I will show pictures of paper offerings and funeral items that I prepared beforehand.
      • I will ask if participants have ever noticed or thought about the paper offerings burned at funerals, and what they think of them.
    • Discussion and sharing: Participants can share interesting or memorable paper offerings they have seen before.
  4. Interactive Session – Designing Personalized Paper Offerings:
    • Task introduction: I will guide participants to imagine that they can prepare personalized paper offerings for the deceased at a funeral, and that these items will be burned after the visitation period or flower-laying ceremony. I will ask if they would be willing to participate in this kind of farewell ceremony.
    • Ask guiding questions:
      • What kind of personalized paper offerings would you want to prepare for the deceased?
      • what would you burn for yourself and deposit in Heaven and Earth Bank in advance?
    • Design and creation: I will hand out paper, pens, and other tools. I will ask participants to write or design the paper offerings they imagine, and record their thoughts.
  5. Discussion and Summary:
    • Sharing and feedback: Participants will share their designs and ideas. I will lead the discussion on how these personalized paper offerings can be included in funerals and whether it’s possible.
    • Questions to explore: I will ask if there might be any problems with adding this kind of personalized offering to funerals. Are there any challenges?
    • Summary and reflection: After the discussion, I will summarize new ideas and reflect on potential challenges or solutions that were raised.
